What Is a Good Conversion Rate for Google Ads? 2026 Benchmarks by Industry

You've got Google Ads running and a conversion rate in your dashboard. But is 4% bad? Is 12% great? Without context, that number is hard to act on, and plenty of business owners either panic over a normal rate or celebrate one that's inflated by bad tracking.

This guide puts your number in context. You'll see 2026 conversion rates for 23 industries, how the average has moved in recent years, what a realistic click-to-lead rate looks like, and a quick checker to compare your account against your industry. We manage Google Ads for small businesses, and where we share our own rules of thumb, we label them.

The short answer

What is a good conversion rate for Google Ads?

Google search ads converted at a median of 8.18% across all industries in 2026. Put another way, a little over one click in every twelve became a lead. Good, in practice, means beating the number for your own industry, because the averages range from under 3% to over 16% depending on what you sell.

What counts as a good conversion rate?

Comparing yourself to the all-industry average can mislead you. A lawyer converting at 6% is doing fine, since legal averages 5.55%. A dentist at 6% is behind, since dental averages 10.67%. Here's how we grade conversion rates against an industry's average:

A pattern stands out: local, need-it-now services convert best. Someone searching for a mechanic, a vet, or a dentist usually wants to book soon. Bigger, slower decisions (insurance, furniture, real estate, a new job) convert less often because people compare options over days or weeks.

Trend

How Google Ads conversion rates have trended

Conversion rates have climbed for two straight years. WordStream's figure rose from 6.96% in its 2024 report to 7.52% in 2025 and 8.18% in 2026, and conversion rates went up in 87% of industries in the latest report (WordStream).

For a longer view, WordStream's first benchmark report, from 2016, put the average at just 2.70%. Better automated bidding and more advertisers tracking phone calls and form fills properly both play a part, though methods have changed over the years, so treat the long-term comparison as directional.

Higher conversion rates have kept leads affordable. A click cost $4.66 in WordStream's 2024 report and $5.42 two years later, yet since a bigger share of clicks now convert, what advertisers pay per lead stayed flat at $66.69.
Lead generation

Typical click to lead conversion rate in Google Ads

For a business that wants calls, form fills, or bookings, the conversion rate that matters is click to lead: out of everyone who clicks your ad, how many contact you? Google's formula is the share of ad interactions that result in a conversion, and on search ads an interaction means a click. So if 1,000 clicks produce 50 leads, you're converting at 5% (Google Ads Help).

Typical range

5% to 10%

The average click to lead conversion rate for most lead-generation businesses on Google search, or 5 to 10 leads per 100 clicks.

Strong local services

10% to 16%

Mechanics, doctors' offices, dental practices, and personal service providers commonly convert at double-digit rates.

The 5% to 10% range reflects where most of the 23 industries in WordStream's data fall. Your exact number depends on what you count as a lead, so be consistent: a phone call over 60 seconds, a submitted form, or a booked appointment are all reasonable choices, but a page view isn't.

Click to lead is only half the story

A high click-to-lead rate means little if those leads don't become customers. Track one more step, lead to customer, so you can see the true cost of a sale:

StepExample numbersRate
Clicks400
Leads (calls and forms)328% click to lead
Customers825% lead to customer
Overall8 customers from 400 clicks2% click to customer

Illustrative example. Your close rate depends on your sales process, pricing, and how quickly you respond to leads.

Why it matters

Why conversion rate drives your cost per lead

What you pay for each lead comes down to two things: the price of a click and the share of clicks that convert. Improve the second and every lead gets cheaper, even when clicks get pricier. Plotting all 23 industries shows the pattern:

$0 $20 $40 $60 $80 $100 $120 $140 0% 3% 6% 9% 12% 15% 18% Conversion rate Cost per lead Animals & pets: 16.22% conversion rate, $31.50 per lead Animals & pets Apparel, fashion & jewelry: 4.50% conversion rate, $97.51 per lead Arts & entertainment: 5.91% conversion rate, $26.84 per lead Arts Attorneys & legal services: 5.55% conversion rate, $131.63 per lead Legal Automotive: for sale: 6.01% conversion rate, $44.26 per lead Automotive: repair & parts: 15.51% conversion rate, $29.96 per lead Auto repair Beauty & personal care: 10.35% conversion rate, $39.25 per lead Business services: 4.85% conversion rate, $93.69 per lead Career & employment: 3.05% conversion rate, $67.36 per lead Dentists & dental services: 10.67% conversion rate, $72.97 per lead Education & instruction: 13.14% conversion rate, $77.48 per lead Education Finance & insurance: 2.64% conversion rate, $74.44 per lead Finance & insurance Furniture: 2.99% conversion rate, $106.70 per lead Furniture Health & fitness: 6.94% conversion rate, $67.36 per lead Home & home improvement: 8.05% conversion rate, $90.92 per lead Industrial & commercial: 8.20% conversion rate, $75.19 per lead Personal services: 12.34% conversion rate, $54.60 per lead Physicians & surgeons: 12.43% conversion rate, $40.04 per lead Physicians Real estate: 3.70% conversion rate, $102.51 per lead Restaurants & food: 8.05% conversion rate, $30.57 per lead Shopping, collectibles & gifts: 4.01% conversion rate, $49.40 per lead Sports & recreation: 7.69% conversion rate, $44.26 per lead Travel: 5.83% conversion rate, $44.70 per lead

Each dot is one industry, plotting its 2026 median CVR (left to right) against its median lead cost (bottom to top), from WordStream. Legal sits high because its clicks average $9.87, the most expensive of any industry.

Here's what that means for one account. A home services business spending $2,000 a month at $8.33 a click gets about 240 clicks. At a 5% conversion rate, that's 12 leads at about $167 each. Raise the rate to 10% and the same budget brings 24 leads at about $83 each. Doubling your conversion rate cuts your cost per lead in half, without spending a dollar more.

Check your data

When your conversion rate looks wrong

Before you celebrate or panic, make sure the number is real. In our audits, broken tracking is one of the most common reasons a rate looks unusual.

Signs your rate is inflated

  • Page views or button clicks set as primary conversions
  • Each form fill counted several times
  • Short or accidental calls counted as leads
  • Imported goals from Google Analytics double-counting
  • A rate above 25% for a lead-generation campaign

Signs your rate is understated

  • No call tracking, so phone leads are invisible
  • Thank-you page tag missing or broken
  • Leads from chat or booking tools not tracked
  • Conversions only counted on desktop
  • Recent conversions still waiting to be attributed
Quick test

Compare the conversions in Google Ads with the actual leads in your inbox and call log for the same week. If the numbers are far apart, fix tracking before you change anything else. Every other decision depends on that data being right.

Improve it

How to improve your Google Ads conversion rate

These are the changes that move conversion rates most in the accounts we manage, roughly in the order we tackle them.

1

Fix conversion tracking first

Count only real leads as primary conversions, track calls from ads and your website, and set forms to count once per click.

2

Match keywords to buying intent

Focus on searches like "emergency plumber near me" rather than "how to fix a leaky pipe." Review search terms weekly and add negative keywords for anything irrelevant.

3

Send clicks to a dedicated landing page

Each ad group should lead to a page about that exact service, with the same wording as the ad, not your homepage.

4

Make contacting you effortless

Put a tap-to-call button and a short form at the top of the page. Ask only for what you need: name, phone, and a short message.

5

Speed up the page on mobile

Most local searches happen on phones. Compress images, cut extra scripts, and test the page on a mid-range phone over cellular data.

6

Show proof

Reviews, star ratings, before-and-after photos, licenses, and guarantees near the form all reduce hesitation.

7

Run ads when you can answer

Use an ad schedule so calls come in during business hours, and reply to form leads within minutes, not hours.

8

Let bidding optimize for real leads

Once tracking is clean and you have steady conversion volume, Smart Bidding strategies like Maximize conversions or Target CPA can push spend toward the clicks most likely to convert.

A better conversion rate also stretches your budget further. To size that budget, see how much you should spend on Google Ads.

Comparison

How Google Ads compares with Facebook Ads

On conversion rate alone, the two platforms were close in 2026: Facebook lead campaigns averaged 8.54% and Google search ads 8.18% (WordStream). Facebook leads were much cheaper, at $27.39 versus $66.69. The difference is intent. Google reaches people already searching for what you sell, so those leads often close at higher rates. Our comparison of Google Ads vs Facebook Ads explains when each platform makes sense.

The bottom line

In 2026, Google search ads averaged an 8.18% conversion rate, and for most lead-generation businesses a typical click to lead conversion rate sits around 5% to 10%. Still, the benchmark that matters is your own industry's, which can be anywhere from under 3% to above 16%. Make sure your tracking counts only real leads, then improve keywords and landing pages. Each gain in conversion rate lowers your cost per lead without raising your budget.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is a good conversion rate for Google Ads?
For search campaigns, the 2026 average across industries was 8.18%, according to WordStream. Treat your own industry's average as the baseline: matching it is solid, about 1.5 times it is good, and double it is excellent. Those tiers are our guidance, not an official standard.
What is the average conversion rate for Google Ads?
The typical search campaign converted 8.18% of clicks in 2026, up from 7.52% a year earlier, according to WordStream's study of more than 13,000 American campaigns. Insurance and financial firms trailed the field at 2.64%; pet businesses led it at 16.22%.
What is a typical click to lead conversion rate in Google Ads?
For lead-generation search campaigns, a typical click-to-lead rate is roughly 5% to 10%, or 5 to 10 leads for every 100 clicks. Local service categories such as auto repair, dental, and personal services often run above 10%, while finance, real estate, and furniture usually fall below 4%.
How is Google Ads conversion rate calculated?
Take the conversions you recorded and split them over the ad interactions from the same stretch of time. With search ads, an interaction is a click, so 30 leads from 600 clicks works out to 5%.
Why is my Google Ads conversion rate so high?
A rate far above your industry's often means tracking is counting the wrong things, such as page views, button clicks, or the same lead several times. Make sure only real leads are set as primary conversions and that lead forms count once per click.
Why is my Google Ads conversion rate low?
The usual causes are broad keywords that attract the wrong searches, ads sending people to a generic homepage, slow or confusing landing pages, and missing call tracking. Fix tracking first, then search terms, then the landing page.
Do Facebook ads convert better than Google Ads?
On WordStream's 2026 numbers they're close: Facebook lead campaigns averaged 8.54% and Google search ads 8.18%. Facebook leads were cheaper, at $27.39 versus $66.69, but Google leads come from people actively searching, so they often close at a higher rate.
