If you've ever asked an agency what it costs and heard "it depends," you know how frustrating that answer is. You're trying to plan a budget, and nobody will give you a number.
So this guide gives you numbers. Below you'll find what businesses actually pay for SEO, PPC, social media, email, and AI marketing services, based on independent 2026 pricing data, plus our own published prices so you have a real example to compare against. We'll also cover the costs that don't show up in a quote, and how to tell whether a price is fair.
How much does it cost to hire a marketing agency?
Most small and mid-sized businesses pay $1,500 to $10,000 a month for marketing agency services, plus whatever they spend on ads. A single service from a smaller agency can start under $1,000 a month, while a multi-channel program with a larger agency can run well past $10,000.
$100 to $149 per hour
The typical rate for US agencies across SEO, PPC, email, content, and web design, according to 2026 pricing data from Clutch.
$500 to $10,000+ per month
Per service, depending on scope. The most common SEO retainer in an Ahrefs survey of 439 SEO providers was just $501 to $1,000 a month.
Every marketing budget has two parts: the agency fee, which pays for the people doing the work, and your ad spend, which goes straight to Google, Meta, or other platforms. Always ask for both when comparing quotes.
Marketing agency cost by service
Here's how the main services compare. Industry figures come from Clutch's 2026 pricing data, which draws on verified client reviews. The last column shows our own published pricing as a real-world example.
| Service | Typical US hourly rate | Industry average or typical cost | eGr0wth monthly plans |
|---|---|---|---|
| SEO | $100 to $149 | ~$3,199/month average (Clutch); most common retainer $501 to $1,000 (Ahrefs) | $750 to $2,195 |
| PPC management | $100 to $149 | ~$7,165/month average (Clutch) | $750 to $2,195, flat fee |
| Social media marketing | $100 to $149 | ~$5,107/month average (Clutch) | $750 to $2,195 (organic or paid) |
| Email marketing | $100 to $149 | Projects typically $10,000 to $49,999 (Clutch) | $575 to $1,825 |
| AI marketing | Varies | No independent benchmark yet; agencies commonly quote ~$1,500 to $5,000/month for small businesses | $699 to $1,499 |
Industry average vs a small-business-focused agency
Clutch's averages are useful, but they're pulled upward by larger companies with bigger budgets. Here's how they compare with our most popular plan in each service.
Clutch averages are based on client-reported project costs on its platform and include businesses of every size. eGr0wth prices are our published monthly plans as of October 2026, excluding ad spend.
How marketing agencies charge
Two agencies can quote very different numbers for similar work simply because they price it differently. Knowing the models makes quotes easier to compare.
| Model | How it works | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly retainer | A set fee each month for an agreed scope of work | A clear list of what's included each month |
| Flat management fee | A fixed fee to manage ads, no matter how much you spend | Limits on number of campaigns or platforms |
| Percentage of ad spend | Commonly 10% to 20% of your monthly ad budget, often with a minimum | Fees rise automatically as you scale spend |
| Project fee | One price for a defined deliverable, like an audit or website | What happens if the scope changes |
| Hourly | You pay for time spent, usually $100 to $149 an hour in the US | Hard to predict your monthly total |
| Performance-based | Part of the fee tied to leads or sales | How a "lead" is defined and tracked |
We charge flat monthly fees for ad management rather than a percentage of spend, so your fee doesn't go up just because you increase your ad budget.
How much do SEO services cost?
SEO is one of the most affordable places to start, and one of the most variable in price. The independent data tells a consistent story: most SEO providers charge less than many business owners expect.
Most common monthly retainer: $501 to $1,000
That's the single most popular range among the 439 SEO providers Ahrefs surveyed, chosen by 20.4% of them. More than two-thirds (68.8%) charge $2,000 a month or less (Ahrefs).
Most common hourly rate: $75 to $100
Reported by 24% of providers in the same survey. Clutch puts most agencies on its platform at $100 to $149 an hour (Clutch).
Most common one-time project: $2,501 to $5,000
For audits, technical fixes, or a defined SEO project, per Ahrefs.
Average monthly cost on Clutch: about $3,199
Higher than the survey's typical retainer because Clutch's reviews include larger businesses with bigger sites and more competition.
What changes the price of SEO
A single-location business targeting a handful of local keywords needs far less work than an online store with thousands of product pages competing nationally. The number of pages, how much content you need each month, link building, and how competitive your search results are all affect price.
Our SEO pricing
| eGr0wth plan | Price | What's included |
|---|---|---|
| Seed | $750/mo | Foundational audit and on-page fixes (5 pages), keyword and competitor research, local SEO setup for 1 location, monthly reporting |
| Sprout (most popular) | $1,475/mo | Full site audit and technical fixes, on-page SEO for up to 10 pages, link strategy, local SEO and competitor tracking, monthly strategy call |
| Rooted | $2,195/mo | Content strategy, technical and on-page SEO across the full site, local and national targeting, dedicated support, monthly growth review |
| À la carte | $199/mo | One-time audits, fixes, or consulting (4-hour minimum) |

How much does PPC management cost?
Pay-per-click advertising has two costs that are easy to confuse: the management fee you pay the agency, and the ad spend you pay Google, Meta, or Microsoft for clicks.
~$7,165/month average
That's the average monthly cost across PPC projects reviewed on Clutch, where typical projects total $10,000 to $49,999 and run about 14 months. Small-business-focused agencies often charge far less, either as a flat fee or 10% to 20% of ad spend.
Set by your goals
In 2026 benchmarks, Google search ads averaged $5.42 per click and $66.69 per lead (WordStream), while Meta leads campaigns averaged $27.39 per lead (WordStream). Your budget should cover enough clicks to learn what works.
Multiply the number of leads you want each month by a realistic cost per lead. For example, 20 leads at about $67 each is roughly $1,340 a month in Google search ad spend, before the management fee. Your industry's costs may be higher or lower.
Our PPC management pricing
| eGr0wth plan | Price | What's included |

| Ignite | $750/mo | Account setup or audit, keyword and audience targeting, ad copywriting, conversion tracking, monthly reporting |

| Blaze | $2,195/mo | Full-funnel search, display, and social campaigns, advanced testing, growth review call |
| À la carte | $199/mo | One-off PPC projects and fixes (4-hour minimum) |

How much does email marketing cost?
Email is often the best-value channel because you're marketing to people who already know you. Most of the cost goes into building the automated sequences once, then keeping campaigns going each month.
If you're comparing agencies by the hour, expect US rates in the low-to-mid hundreds; Clutch's 2026 data places most email specialists between $100 and $149. Larger engagements reviewed there, such as a full program build, tend to land somewhere in the five figures. For a small business that just needs sequences built and campaigns sent each month, ongoing help usually costs a few hundred to a couple of thousand dollars.
Strategy, writing, and automation
- Welcome, nurture, and re-engagement sequences
- Copywriting and branded design
- Segmentation and A/B testing
- Reporting on opens, clicks, and revenue
Your email platform
Tools like Klaviyo, Mailchimp, or HubSpot charge their own subscription, which usually grows with the size of your list. Ask your agency which platform they recommend and what it will cost at your list size.
Our email marketing pricing
| eGr0wth plan | Price | What's included |
|---|---|---|
| Mailer Lite | $575/mo | 1 to 2 automated sequences, copywriting and layout, tool setup, monthly reporting |
| Mailer Flow (most popular) | $1,095/mo | 3 to 4 sequences, branded content, segmentation, revenue tracking, monthly strategy call |
| Mailer Pro | $1,825/mo | Full lifecycle strategy, advanced triggered flows, up to 8 campaigns a month, weekly optimization |

How much do AI marketing services cost?
AI marketing is the newest category on this list, so pricing is still settling. Most AI marketing services fall into three buckets:
AI search optimization (AEO or GEO)
Getting your business cited in answers from ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Perplexity, Gemini, and Claude through structured data, clear content, and technical fixes.
AI-assisted content and automation
Faster blog, email, and ad copy production, plus chatbots and automated lead follow-up.
AI-powered reporting
Tracking how often AI tools mention you, alongside traditional rankings and leads.
There's no independent pricing survey for AI search optimization yet. Agencies that sell it commonly quote about $1,500 to $5,000 a month for small businesses, and AI visibility tracking software adds roughly $50 to $1,000 or more a month (WebFX). Treat those as quoted ranges, not benchmarks.
Custom AI development is a different service with a different price tag. Building a custom AI tool or app averages about $120,595 per project on Clutch, with typical projects at $10,000 to $49,999 (Clutch). Most small businesses need AI marketing, not custom AI development.
Our AI marketing pricing
| eGr0wth plan | Price | What's included |

Sample monthly marketing budgets
Here's what a full monthly budget can look like at three stages, using our published prices for the agency fees. Ad spend amounts are examples only; yours should be based on your goals and industry.
| Budget | Services | Agency fees | Example ad spend | Monthly total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | SEO + PPC | $1,500 | $1,500 | $3,000 |

Hidden costs to plan for
A quote rarely tells the whole story. Ask about each of these before you sign so there are no surprises.
Ad spend
Paid directly to the ad platforms and almost never included in the agency fee.
Software and tools
Email platforms, scheduling tools, call tracking, and AI visibility trackers may be billed to you separately.
Setup or onboarding fees
Some agencies charge a one-time fee to audit accounts and build tracking.
Creative production
Video shoots, photography, and extra design rounds are often outside the monthly scope.
Contract length and exit terms
A low monthly price with a 12-month lock-in can cost more than a higher price you can cancel.
Website changes
Landing pages or site fixes needed for SEO and ads may be billed as separate projects.
What affects the price of a marketing agency?
Number of channels
One service costs far less than a coordinated program across ads, SEO, social, and email.
Your industry's competition
Legal, home services, and finance take more work to win than less crowded markets.
Content and creative
More posts, pages, videos, and ad variations mean more hours each month.
Local vs national
Ranking in one city is usually cheaper than competing across the country.
Ad spend size
Larger budgets mean more campaigns to manage, test, and optimize.
Experience and location
Rates vary widely by country; Clutch lists US agencies mostly at $100 to $149 an hour.
Cheap vs expensive agencies: what you're really paying for
The cheapest quote isn't always the best value, and the most expensive isn't always the best work. What matters is how much skilled time goes into your account and whether it's tied to results.
Signs a price is too low
- Guaranteed rankings or results for a tiny fee
- No clear list of monthly deliverables
- No reporting, or reports with no leads or sales
- Long contracts that make it hard to leave
- The agency keeps ownership of your accounts
Signs you're getting value
- Transparent, published pricing
- A clear scope of work for each month
- Reporting tied to leads, calls, and revenue
- You own every ad account and asset
- Plans that grow with you instead of locking you in
Agency cost vs building an in-house team
The real alternative to an agency is hiring. At US median pay, a basic three-person marketing team (a manager, a specialist, and a designer) costs roughly $450,000 a year once benefits are included. Even a full-service agency program at $15,000 a month, including ad spend, comes to $180,000 a year.
That doesn't mean an agency is right for everyone. We break down that decision, including when you're better off waiting, in our post Do I Need a Marketing Agency?
Most small businesses can get expert help with one channel for under $1,500 a month, and a strong multi-channel program for $4,000 to $9,000 a month in agency fees. Start with the channel closest to revenue, measure what it brings in, and add more as the results justify it.

How much does social media marketing cost?
Social media marketing comes in two forms, and they're priced differently. Organic social covers content creation, posting, and community engagement. Paid social covers running ads on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, or TikTok, plus the ad spend itself.
Clutch reports an average monthly cost of about $5,107 for social media marketing, with most projects lasting around 12 months, though most projects reviewed total under $10,000 (Clutch). The biggest cost drivers are how many platforms you're on, how many posts and videos you need, and whether someone is responding to comments and messages every day.
