More and more of your customers are getting answers from AI before they ever visit a website. This guide shows you, step by step, how to make your business one of the sources those answers rely on.
It's written for business owners and marketers, not engineers, and it turns answer engine optimization best practices into eight practical steps. Each step explains what to do, why it matters, and how to check your work, and everything comes together in a checklist at the end that you can tick off as you go. If you're brand new to the topic, start with our primer, What Is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?
Why AEO matters now
AI answers have gone from novelty to habit in about two years. These are the figures behind the shift.
AI answers change how people click
When Pew Research tracked the browsing of 900 U.S. adults, people who saw a Google AI summary clicked a regular result about half as often, and more of them ended their search right there.
Source: Pew Research Center, browsing data from March 2025.
Which searches get AI answers
AI Overviews show up mostly on searches where someone wants to learn something. That's why AEO is built around answering questions well.

How to use this AEO guide
Steps build on each other
Access comes before content, and content comes before measurement. If AI tools can't reach your pages, nothing else on this list matters yet.
36 items in six groups
Already know the basics? Go straight to the AEO checklist. Your progress is saved in your browser, and you can print it.
One principle runs through every step: according to Google, the same SEO fundamentals that drive regular rankings also drive its AI features (Google Search Central). AEO isn't a set of tricks. It's making your content as easy as possible to find, understand, and quote accurately.
How answer engines work
Whether it's Google AI Mode or ChatGPT, the path from question to answer looks broadly the same. Every step in this guide targets one of these stages.
Someone asks
A person types or speaks a full question into Google, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot, or a voice assistant.
The engine searches
It looks through a search index, such as Google's or Bing's, or its own crawled pages, for content related to the question.
It picks passages
It favors short, clear passages from trusted pages that directly answer what was asked.
It writes an answer
The AI combines what it found into one summarized response, often in a few sentences.
It cites sources
The pages it relied on are linked or named. Being one of them is the goal of AEO.
| Stage | What can stop you | Guide step |
|---|---|---|
| Finding your page | Blocked crawlers, missing from the index, firewall rules | Step 1 |
| Matching the question | No page that addresses the question directly | Steps 2 and 4 |
| Picking a passage | Answers buried in long paragraphs, images, or tabs | Step 3 |
| Trusting the source | Thin authority, inconsistent business details, no reviews | Steps 5, 6, and 7 |
| Knowing it worked | No tracking of citations or AI traffic | Step 8 |
How each answer engine finds your content
Each answer engine discovers pages in its own way. This table shows which crawler or index each one depends on, and what you need to do to be eligible.
| Answer engine | Finds content through | To be eligible | Where to track it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google AI Overviews and AI Mode | Googlebot (Google's search index) | Be indexed and eligible for a text snippet in Google Search | Search Console (included in web search data) |
| ChatGPT search | OAI-SearchBot | Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt | Analytics referrals from chatgpt.com |
| Perplexity | PerplexityBot | Allow PerplexityBot in robots.txt | Analytics referrals from perplexity.ai |
| Microsoft Copilot and Bing | Bingbot (Bing's index) | Be indexed in Bing | Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance report |
| Claude | Claude-SearchBot | Allow Claude-SearchBot in robots.txt | Analytics referrals from claude.ai |
| Gemini app | Google's crawlers | Be indexed in Google; Google-Extended affects use in Gemini apps | Analytics referrals from gemini.google.com |
Based on official documentation from Google, OpenAI, Perplexity, Anthropic, and Google's crawler list. Crawler names and behavior can change, so recheck these pages periodically.
Make sure answer engines can reach your site
This is the most overlooked part of AEO, and the most fixable. If a crawler is blocked, your content can't be cited no matter how good it is.
Separate search crawlers from training crawlers
Most AI companies run more than one crawler, and they do different jobs. Search crawlers decide whether you can be cited in answers. Training crawlers collect content to build future AI models. You can treat them differently.
| Company | Allow for AI answers | Training only (optional to block) |
|---|---|---|
| Googlebot | Google-Extended (also affects use in Gemini apps; doesn't affect Google Search) | |
| Microsoft | Bingbot | Not applicable |
| OpenAI | OAI-SearchBot | GPTBot |
| Perplexity | PerplexityBot | Not used for training, per Perplexity |
| Anthropic | Claude-SearchBot | ClaudeBot |
OpenAI states that blocking GPTBot doesn't affect ChatGPT search, and Google states that Google-Extended doesn't affect inclusion or ranking in Google Search (OpenAI, Google).
A sample robots.txt
Your robots.txt file lives at yoursite.com/robots.txt. Here's an example that welcomes search and AI answer crawlers while opting out of model training. Adjust it to your own preferences.
# Let search engines and AI search tools find your pages User-agent: Googlebot Allow: / User-agent: Bingbot Allow: / User-agent: OAI-SearchBot Allow: / User-agent: PerplexityBot Allow: / User-agent: Claude-SearchBot Allow: / # Optional: opt out of AI model training only # (this does not affect search or AI answer visibility) User-agent: GPTBot Disallow: / User-agent: ClaudeBot Disallow: / Sitemap: https://www.example.com/sitemap.xml
Check beyond robots.txt
Firewalls, CDNs, and security plugins
Some services block AI bots automatically. Review your bot settings and firewall logs to make sure the crawlers you want aren't being turned away.
Indexing and snippet settings
Google requires a page to be indexed and eligible for a text snippet to appear in its AI features. A stray noindex or nosnippet tag can quietly remove you (Google).
Content that needs JavaScript to appear
If key text only shows up after scripts run, some crawlers may never see it. Important answers should be in the page's HTML.
Bing Webmaster Tools
Many teams only set up Google Search Console. Bing's index powers Copilot, so verify your site there too and submit your sitemap.
Find the questions that matter most
AEO starts with questions, not keywords. People talk to AI tools the way they'd talk to an expert, in full sentences with specific details. Your job is to know those questions and have the best answer to each one.
Longer, question-style searches trigger AI answers
The more specific and conversational a search is, the more likely Google answers it with AI. Searches of seven or more words show an AI Overview nearly five times as often as one-word searches.
Share of Google results pages showing an AI Overview, by number of words in the search.

Where to find your customers' real questions
Sales calls, emails, and chats
The questions your team answers every week are the questions people ask AI. Write them down word for word.
Search Console queries
Filter queries by words like how, what, why, cost, and best to find the questions already bringing people to your site.
"People also ask" boxes
Google shows related questions for most searches. Each one is a potential section on your site.
Ask the answer engines
Ask ChatGPT or Perplexity what people usually want to know about your service. The follow-up questions they suggest are useful too.
Group questions by intent
| Question type | Example | Best home for the answer |
|---|---|---|
| What is / how does | What is a tankless water heater? | Guide or educational blog post |
| How to | How do I unclog a drain without chemicals? | Step-by-step article with a numbered list |
| Cost and pricing | How much does a water heater replacement cost? | Pricing page or cost guide with a table |
| Comparison | Tank vs tankless water heater: which is better? | Comparison page with a side-by-side table |
| Best / who | Who is the best plumber in Tulsa? | Service and location pages, reviews, and your Business Profile |
| Problem | Why is my water heater making noise? | Troubleshooting article that leads to your service |
Pick your 10 most valuable questions and ask each one in Google AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Copilot. Record who gets cited. This baseline shows where you stand today and gives you something to measure progress against.
Write answer-first content
This is the heart of AEO. Answer engines don't quote whole pages; they lift short passages. The easier you make it to find and lift a clear answer, the more likely you are to be the source.
The answer-first formula
Ask the question in the heading
Use the words your customers use. "How long does a roof replacement take?" beats "Project timelines."
Answer it in the first one or two sentences
Give the direct answer immediately, roughly 40 to 60 words, written so it still makes sense if it's quoted on its own.
Then add the detail
Explain the factors, exceptions, and examples below the answer for readers who want more.
Structure what you can
Use numbered lists for steps, tables for comparisons and prices, and short bullet lists for key points.
Anatomy of an answer-ready section
Here's what those four steps look like on a real page, with one more element that helps answer engines trust what they're reading.
Most homeowners pay $1,200 to $3,500 to replace a tank water heater, including installation. Tankless models usually cost $2,500 to $5,000.
Your price depends on the fuel type, tank size, and whether venting or plumbing needs updating...

Answer-ready
How long does a roof replacement take?
Most residential roof replacements take one to three days. A typical 2,000-square-foot asphalt shingle roof takes about two days, while steep, complex, or tile roofs can take a week. Weather and material delivery can add time.
Writing tips that help AI quote you accurately
Microsoft's guidance on getting included in AI answers recommends specific headings, self-contained answers, and structured formats, and warns against long text blocks and content hidden in tabs or images (Microsoft Advertising). In practice:
Do
- Keep paragraphs short and focused on one idea
- Use exact numbers, ranges, and dates
- Name your sources when you cite data
- Define terms in plain language
- Name the subject again rather than relying on "it" or "this" across sentences
- Make your title, H1, and meta description agree
Avoid
- Burying the answer after a long introduction
- Vague claims like "best-in-class" without proof
- Hiding key details in accordions, tabs, or sliders
- Putting prices or specs only in images or PDFs
- Decorative symbols and overloaded sentences
- Writing for keywords rather than for the question
Build topical depth
One great page helps. A connected set of pages that covers a subject thoroughly helps much more, because it shows both search engines and answer engines that you're a reliable source on that topic.
AI cites more than just the top results
When Ahrefs looked at the pages Google's AI Overviews cite, fewer than 4 in 10 ranked in the top 10 for the original search. Ahrefs' explanation is that the AI breaks one question into several related ones and pulls answers from the pages ranking for those. Covering the follow-up questions around a topic gives you more chances to be cited.

Create a hub page for each core service
Cover the service fully, then link out to supporting pages for specific questions.
Add supporting pages for the big questions
Cost, timelines, comparisons, and common problems each deserve their own focused page or section.
Link them together
Supporting pages link to the hub, and the hub links to each supporting page.
Publish something only you can
Original data, real project examples, photos, and first-hand experience give answer engines a reason to choose you over a generic source.
Keep pages current
Update prices, statistics, and dates regularly, and show the date the page was last reviewed.
Add structured data the right way
Structured data, usually written as JSON-LD schema, labels the facts on your page so machines can read them reliably. It's useful, but it's often oversold in AEO advice.
Clarifies who you are and what's on the page
Schema can identify your business, its location, products, services, reviews, and articles. Microsoft lists schema among its recommendations for AI search answers (Microsoft).
It isn't a shortcut into AI answers
Google doesn't offer any AI-only markup, and it wants structured data to reflect what visitors actually see on the page (Google).
Schema types worth adding
| Schema type | Use it on |
|---|---|
| Organization or LocalBusiness | Your homepage or About page, with name, logo, contact details, and social profiles |
| Service | Individual service pages |
| Product and Offer | Product pages, with price and availability |
| Article | Blog posts and guides, with author and date |
| Review and AggregateRating | Pages that display genuine customer reviews |
| BreadcrumbList | Any page in your site structure |

A note on FAQ schema: Google stopped showing FAQ rich results in Search in May 2026 (Google Search Central). Clear questions and answers on the page are still valuable for AEO, because answer engines read your visible content. The markup alone won't earn a special result in Google.
Strengthen trust and entity signals
Answer engines are cautious about who they cite. They favor businesses they can clearly identify and that other sources vouch for. In AEO terms, you want your business to be a well-defined "entity" with consistent, corroborated information.
Keep your details identical everywhere
Business name, address, phone number, hours, and services should match on your website, Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, and directories.
Show the people behind the content
Add author names, credentials, and short bios, especially on advice-heavy pages.
Earn mentions on trusted sites
Industry associations, local news, partner sites, and well-known directories all reinforce who you are.
Collect reviews consistently
AI tools frequently summarize review sites when recommending local businesses.
Keep product and business feeds updated
Google recommends keeping Merchant Center and Business Profile information current for its AI experiences (Google).
Win local and voice answers
Many AI questions are local: "best dentist near me," "who repairs AC units in Broken Arrow," "is the hardware store on Main open Sunday?" These answers lean heavily on business listings and reviews.
Local AEO essentials
- A complete Google Business Profile with accurate categories, services, and hours
- Listings on Bing Places and Apple Business Connect
- A page for each main service and service area
- Recent reviews that mention services and locations naturally
- LocalBusiness schema that matches your listings
Voice-friendly content
- Short, conversational answers to common questions
- Clear hours, location, and contact details in text
- Natural phrasing that reads well out loud
- Fast, mobile-friendly pages
- Question headings that match how people speak
Measure your AI visibility
AEO is harder to measure than SEO, because AI answers change from one person and one moment to the next. Combine these four sources for a reliable picture.
| Tool | What it shows | How often to check |
|---|---|---|
| Google Search Console | Traffic from Google, including AI Overviews and AI Mode, which Google counts in your web search data | Monthly |
| Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance | How often your pages are cited in Copilot and other AI answers, which pages, and the queries behind them (public preview since February 2026) | Monthly |
| Your analytics (such as GA4) | Referral visits from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, copilot.microsoft.com, gemini.google.com, and claude.ai | Monthly |
| Manual prompt testing | Whether you're cited or mentioned for your key questions, and who's cited instead | Monthly |

Visits from AI tools are often fewer but further along in their decision. Add AI assistants as an option on your "How did you hear about us?" question so you can connect AEO to real revenue.
What not to do
Common AEO mistakes
- Blocking all AI bots without realizing it also blocks AI search visibility
- Publishing large volumes of thin, AI-written pages
- Adding schema that doesn't match the visible page
- Rewriting everything around questions while ignoring SEO basics
- Judging results from a single AI answer on a single day
Shortcuts that don't pay off
- Relying on llms.txt or other "AI files." Google says none are needed for its AI features, and a Google search advocate said in 2025 that no AI system was using llms.txt (Search Engine Roundtable).
- Hidden text or keyword stuffing aimed at AI
- Buying fake reviews or mentions
- Anyone promising guaranteed placement in AI answers
Where to start: impact vs effort
Not every AEO task deserves the same attention. Start in the top-left corner, plan for the top-right, and don't let the bottom row eat your time.
